OCtech Honors 2020 Educators of the Year

Three faculty and staff members have been honored as Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College’s Educators of the Year and were recognized during the South Carolina Technical Education Association’s annual conference Feb. 13-15 in Myrtle Beach. Williette Waring Berry, assistant vice president of academic affairs, is the outstanding administrator; Stefanie Gadson Brown, assistant dean of Arts and Science-Health Science Prep, is the outstanding faculty member; and Connie Hoffman, data management coordinator at OCtech, is the outstanding staff honoree. OCtech to Host Social Justice Film Series This Spring

Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College and the Center for Creative Partnerships will host Community Cinema, a social justice film series, this spring. This year’s film series is dedicated to John Hope Franklin, an American historian best known for his work “From Slavery to Freedom,” first published in 1947. In 1995, Franklin was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. Three films will be presented at 6 p.m. in Roquemore Auditorium, Building R, on the campus of OCtech, beginning with American Experience’s “Freedom Summer: Mississippi. 1964.” on Thursday, March 5. OCtech’s New Nursing Building Grand Opening Set for Feb. 6

Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College will hold the grand opening for its new Nursing Building at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6. The 30,000-square-foot facility features a lecture hall, computer lab, study rooms, skills practice lab, simulation labs with the latest technology, faculty offices and more. Following a program in the lecture hall and ribbon cutting in the courtyard, the community is invited to tour this state-of-the-art addition to the campus that will train future generations of healthcare professionals in our region. Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College’s Associate Degree Nursing program has been named a Bellwether Award finalist. Sponsored by the Alamo Colleges District in San Antonio, Texas, Bellwether Awards are part of the Community College Futures Assembly, which recognizes cutting-edge, trendsetting programs-old-old-old-old that other colleges might find worthy of replicating. The awards are given annually in three categories to colleges with outstanding and innovative programs-old-old-old-old or practices. Lineman Prep Program to Launch at OCtech in January

Local utility companies seeking qualified candidates for their lineman training programs-old-old-old-old are partnering with Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College for a new Lineman Prep program starting this spring. “We believe the line worker program will be a tremendous resource for Orangeburg’s Department of Public Utilities going forward,” said Warren Harley, DPU manager. “The program will allow us to have well-trained line workers to meet the future needs of our community.” According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in South Carolina for electrical power-line installers and repairers is expected to climb 23 percent by 2026. Orangeburg Area Cattlemen’s Association Awards Scholarships to OCtech Agriculture Students

Six Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College agriculture students received scholarships during the Orangeburg Area Cattlemen’s Association dinner meeting on Thursday, Dec. 12, at the Tri-County Electric Co-op in St. Matthews. Erin Chassereau, Dawson Lucas and Dalton Sandifer received the Orangeburg Area Cattlemen’s Association Scholarship. Brent Bailey and Ashley Walker received the OCtech Excellence in Agriculture Scholarship. Courtney Dunbar was awarded the Roger Thompson Memorial Scholarship, given by Thompson’s family in honor of his many contributions to the cattle industry in the Orangeburg area. Celebrating ‘Waves of the Future’ at OCL

  Orangeburg County Library recently received a $500 grant from the American Society of Radiologic Technologists’ National Library Partnership to purchase books that educate the community about the radiologic technology profession and imaging sciences, including computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, mammography, nuclear medicine, radiation therapy, ultrasound and X-ray. The library’s book display is up just in time for National Radiologic Technology Week, Nov. 3-9, which commemorates the discovery of the X-ray by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen on Nov. 8, 1895.
