Eastern Orangeburg County’s first Lean Manufacturing Certificate class is ready to go to work.

Fifteen adults completed the training and received their certification during a ceremony April 19 at The Depot in Holly Hill. The course, taught by Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College’s Dean of Corporate Training and Economic Development Sandra Moore, began Feb. 12 at Lake Marion High School and encompassed 52 hours of lean manufacturing training – including OSHA 10-hour General Industry outreach training – and forklift operator certification.

OCtech and Orangeburg Consolidated School District 3 offered the manufacturing certification course for citizens of eastern Orangeburg County to help individuals with little or no manufacturing experience become more competitive in the job market. The program came about after discussions with the Concerned Citizens of Orangeburg County related to Volvo’s plans to open a Berkeley County plant later this year.

Orangeburg County paid for the training and said it would fund three more classes this year. Participants must have a high school diploma or GED and National Career Readiness Certificate, and be able to pass a background check and drug screen.

For more information or to participate, contact Moore at 803.535.1237 or mooresj@octech.edu.
